Placing statues in your garden can reflect the kind of personality that you have. You may make the garden's statue the central theme of your landscape or merely a complimentary piece. It does not matter what shape, size or weight you choose for your statues as long as you stick to an overall theme. However, weight is one key factor since you may want to transfer it from time to time. On the other hand, if it is heavy enough, it will not be toppled down easily by the strong wind.
It is important that your soil be tested to determine if it is fertile enough to promote plant growth. Ph levels have to be measured to determine if it has safe levels to support plant life. To lower the ph levels, it is advised that you spread amounts of iron sulfate during spring time. To raise the levels of ph, the use of lime is recommended. Bare soil is prone to erosion so cover it up with grass, mulch or turf. Prepare your soil with the use of fertilizers like manure or any organic matter deemed beneficial to the soil. Maintaining a soil ph of 6.0 to 7.0 range promotes a healthier soil.
Determine what needs to be redone in your lawn this year. Remove all leaves and debris from your lawn. Search for any crabgrass or broadleaf weeds and get it out. Apply herbicides if necessary between March 15-April 15. Remove any animal droppings because this tends to burn the grass and other plants.
March is an excellent time to prune your trees, remove dead and diseased branches and make cosmetic cuts. Avoid planting trees like silver maple, willows, Bradford pear and other trees that have brittle and weak wood. Be on the look out for gypsy moths as these can do considerable damage to your plants. Remove bagworms as these may hatch and feed on your trees and plants.
This is the perfect time for you to determine what kinds of flowering plants are best for your landscape. Select plants that have lower maintenance requirements and disease resistance and tolerance. Also, you will not need to do pruning, deadheading, staking and watering often thus saving you time and energy.
Remove shrub branches that have been destroyed by winter pruning dead or damaged branches. You can prune spring flowering shrubs indoors so that you can force early blossoms. Check for spider mites and apply horticultural oils spray to destroy and kill the spider eggs. Remove bagworm bags from evergreen shrubs. March is a great time to plant, move and re-plant shrubs.
It is advised for one to rotate crops and be prepared for succession planting all throughout the season. Peas, potatoes, onion seedlings and onion settings can be produced as soon as the soil is prepared. If you have asparagus foliage then this is the best time to have it cut down and composted at this time.
Choose fruit plants that are disease resistant and can withstand the climate this time of the year. There are dormant oil sprays that are effective and can reduce the emergence of fruit pests but make sure that the temperature is ideal for this kind of operation. Prune out the dead fruits, and fire blight damage on apples and pears should be pruned out during the coldest times of the season.
